Mind and Agency: Why Now?

One framework explains experience and behavior through mind, intention, and choice. The other seeks explanations in physical mechanisms and causal processes. They offer fundamentally different accounts of what we are and how we act.

For a long time, these frameworks could develop side by side, their incompatible assumptions largely unchallenged. Advances in AI and neuroscience are changing that. As machines display increasingly human-like behavior and science penetrates the physical causes of action, the contradictions are becoming harder to ignore.

As technical capabilities advance, the stakes rise. How do we build safe AI? How should criminal justice treat voluntary action when its physical causes are better understood? What becomes of moral responsibility when science challenges our assumptions about choice?
